Where local Bridport Materials Come From

Brick making at Powerstock Common was linked to the long-closed railway line from Maiden Newton to Bridport and West Bay. The kiln was built as the Bridport Railway Company had to dig a cutting through the Fuller’s Earth Clay at Witherstone Ridge on Powerstock Common.

Bridport joined the rest of the Victorian towns during the great railway boom when in 1857 when the town was connected to the main network. This allowed for cheaper goods to be brought in such as coal and textiles into the town.

How and When Bridport was Built

The brick workers cottages in South Street were built in 1830 from Oxford blue clay from the Bothenhampton yard. And the Allington and Bradpole yards worked the Down cliff clay. Much of Bridport’s domestic properties where constructed using different building technique’s which would not meet our modern practices today and this is why at times these properties suffer from damp problems. Even after the building boom of 1880 in Bridport many properties were still constructed with different practices and some planning restrictions and were built by Contractors individual tradesman and to different standards. The problem of rising damp through the wall and floor areas should have been entirely removed with the introduction of DPC’s and suspended and wooden floors which started to be introduced in the late Victorian period. The difficulty can be that some have been laid on sleeper walls without a DPC. And others the floor joists are built into the wall, either where it’s below DPC or on internal walls where no DPC was ever installed originally. This has caused many common problems to appear from the ground up such as penetrating damp, wet rot, dry rot and an increase need for woodworm treatments.

Damp Proof Course Common Faults in Bridport

Bridport is famous for rope and net making this why the high street is so wide, as this allowed ropes to be laid out in the street to dry.

Although the origins of Bridport are Saxon and date back to King Alfred the great most of the main historic buildings you see today are 18th century regency. Unlike the rest of the country during the great Victorian building boom of 1880 Bridport stayed quite a small town unlike many of its surrounding towns.

Bridport joined the rest of the Victorian towns during the great railway boom when in 1857 when the town was connected to the main network. This allowed for cheaper goods to be brought in such as coal and textiles into the town.

The bricks were transported back to the Weymouth-Bristol line via the junction at Maiden Newton, as well as by horse and cart, to villages close by. Until the railway reached Powerstock Common, the Railway Company had used other bricks to build road bridges across the many lanes they encountered. Those bridges seem to utilise either local patches of clay as at Stratton and Frampton or possibly the plain, rather than the speckled and more valued, bricks from Broadmayne.

The excavated clay persisted in sliding onto the line, increasing the cost of the whole enterprise well beyond the original estimate. Brick making solved the problem of what to do with the clay and helped defray the costs incurred by the slippage.
