Woodworm Treatment and Wood Boring Insect Infestation Weymouth
Our woodworm treatments will help Weymouth customers get rid of their woodworm in the loft or floorboards. So if you live in the Weymouth area and need a woodworm treatment from a professional woodworm company call us today.
The most widespread form of woodworm in the Weymouth area are common furniture beetles these tiny beetle mainly infest soft woods like untreated pine. All early Victorian and Edwardian construction used this type of timber in the main lofts and in the ceiling joists, floor joists and floorboards. Most wood boring insect infestations take place in the loft this probably because these adult beetles can fly and enter under the roof tiles.
Because many old houses are constructed from soft untreated timber like pine it is susceptible to woodworm attack. Wood boring beetles infest many older homes with this sort of wood and their out breaks appear in the loft, floorboards or garage areas.
The woodworm treatments we offer are safe and easy to apply in your home and much of the work being carried out within a day with no effects on your home or work life.

Wall tie Replacement and Cavity Wall Tie Failure Weymouth
Wall tie replacement is needed in some of Weymouth’s older properties when they start to oxidize. When this happens we offer a wall tie replacement survey which can identify failing wall ties in Weymouth period properties.
Due to much of Weymouth’s housing being Victorian so are the supplies they used, the old fish tail wall tie were a thick galvanised bar and very common during the Victorian building boom of 1880. These wall ties if they have been allowed to rust due to poor or incorrect pointing on your external brickwork can expand to such a size that they crack the bricks in thin mortar beds.
We can inspect your wall ties by looking at them under the brick were most corrosion takes place and our wall tie survey can quickly access the quality of the ties and whether or not wall tie replacement is required.

Repointing Houses and Pointing Brickwork Weymouth
As Victorian houses in Weymouth get older they need repointing this because the mortar wears away and needs replacing this action stops your bricks from rusting or spalling if someone has used cement mortar in the past . We can take out the old mortar and repoint your house with new sand and lime mortar which will make your Weymouth property like new again.
Replacing old sand and lime can be dirty job with the old material carried into the wind and into your home or over your neighbour’s property.
We use several approaches to remove old mortar but our dustless extraction system collects 90% or more of the old material which is safely taken away leaving everyone happy. Example to remember is if 20 bags of sand with lime had to be put back in after extraction then 20 bags of old fine sand and lime had to come out.

Wet and Dry Rot Treatment Weymouth
Wet and dry rot in Weymouth can be quite common due to lack of sub floor ventilation. Because many of Weymouth’s houses have had the ground around them raised they have blocked the air vents this causes moisture to be retained under the floor which creates the right environments for wet and dry rot.
Damp conditions cause wooden timber such as floor joists to rot this happens when wood is exposed to long periods of continuous water absorption. This excess wetness in a dark unvented area such as beneath the ground floor is the ideal conditions for fungi such a wet and dry rot to increase.
Wet rot will crumble the end of your floor joists and make your floor soft and spongy to walk on, this will lead to having some or in extreme cases all your wooden floor joists and floorboards replaced. Weymouth’s Victorian homes have had lots of changes to height of the external land around them such as driveways and paths. This has meant that lots of air vents have been covered over or dpc‘s breached by penetrating damp. These changes have combined to increase the incidences of this type of damp in Weymouth of wet and dry rot at a sub floor level.
Wet and Dry Rot Specialist Company Weymouth
Dry Rot and Wet Rot are wood destroying fungi which attack timber in order to extract food to maintain growth and the generation of spores. Affected timber exhibits substantial loss of weight. In buildings the result is the deterioration and ultimately destruction of the timber with serious significances in the case of structural sections. The problem affects all types of property, historic or modern. Dampness combined with lack of exposure to air provides the ideal conditions for fungal attack.

How and when Weymouth was built.
Weymouth started as a small fishing village around Wyke Regis and during the 12th Century really started to grow. By 1252 it had become an established harbour and had become a chartered borough.
Weymouth was joined with Melcombe Regis by an Act of Parliament in 1571 and both towns became known as Weymouth. As Weymouth has grown it has taken in the local villages such as Chickerell, Preston, Broadwey, Upwey, Wyke Regis, Southill, Littlemoor, Radipole and Sutton Poyntz.
Weymouth’s famous beach boulevard has Georgian terraces built along the front. These once single dwellings have been converted into hotels, guest houses flats and shops. These properties were built during the Georgian and Regency periods between1770 – 1855. The Jubilee clock was sited in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s 50 year reign. The 1881 Census shows Weymouth.
Properties behind the boulevard in Walpole road, Hardwick St, Ranelagh Road, Chelmsford St, Derby St and Victoria Street. These are mostly Victorian terraced houses built around 1870 onwards.
Weymouth also prospered during the Victorian property boom of 1880 and areas like Chickerell and Westham quickly grew building more of the classic Victorian terraced houses we recognise today.
This is a narrow property with a hall with stairs in front of you with a front parlour (Lounge) entrance opposite the stairs. Walk passed the stairs and head towards the kitchen and rear parlour. At the rear of the kitchen will be a W.C.
As you move away from Weymouth centre on the Dorchester Road and towards Radipole you can see Weymouth’s Edwardian 1910 building phase these larger middle class homes shows how Weymouth sea front and harbour bought wealth to the area.
Damp proof courses in Weymouth houses
The building boom of 1880 many properties were built with no planning regulations and were built by different tradesman and not the same standards.
Damp proof courses were not regularly installed in any building construction method until the introduction of the Public Health Act in 1875. Three years later the Building Act of 1878 provided more detail on the types of constructions and the regulation of their construction.
The threat of rising damp through the floor should have been entirely removed with introduction of suspended wooden floors which started to be introduced in the late Victorian period.
The design fault was some have been laid on sleeper walls without a DPC. And others the floor joists are built into the wall, either where it’s below DPC or on internal walls where no DPC was ever installed originally. This has caused many shared complications to appear from the ground up such as penetrating damp, wet rot, dry rot and an increase need for woodworm treatments.
Where local Weymouth materials came from?
Portland stone has been used since Romans times but commercially the first quarry didn’t open until the end of the 17th century. Portland stone was made famous by Sir Christopher Wren who used it to construct St Pauls Cathedral.
Many other clay pits like the one at Chickerell are now flooded and have been used as environmental projects converted into businesses like Bennett’s water garden at Chickerell. Chickerell Brickworks and clay pits were first opened in 1859.
The small village of Powerstock common near Bridport in Dorset used to have a Suffolk Kiln and could have produced up to 20,000 bricks. The kiln produced handmade and perforated wire cut bricks as well as land drain pipes and some roofing tiles. These bricks were light red to cream in colour. The clay pit its self was on the same land and made transport easier. The kiln was built around the same time as the Bridport branch railway which was in 1857.
The village at Broadmayne had a Scotch kiln which has a capacity of 35,000 bricks there colour was a speckled brick with iron pyrites spots similar to the Redland Crowborough Ashdown stock brick.
The start of Weymouth railway was agreed in 1845 and finally in 1857 the Dorchester to Weymouth section was completed and the Yeovil Junction connection for trains to London.
