Where Local Wimborne Materials Came From?
The village of Holt, north of Wimborne had four 19th Century brickyards, one of these was in operation until 1952. All the brickyards were using the London Clay. These were the local yards which were used to build properties in the Wimborne area and local villages.
How and When Wimborne was Built.
The mediaeval town was confined to the W. bank of the Allen and in Saxon times it occupied only a small area in the immediate vicinity of the Minster. The houses were probably centred on a rectangular market place on the N.W. of the Minster, now reduced by infilling to the present Corn Market; names such as West Row and Cook Row perhaps indicate the process of infilling.
Apart from the Minster, a church of Saxon origin enlarged in the 12th and 13th centuries, little remains of mediaeval Wimborne. It continued as a small town, without attaining formal borough status, and it is doubtful if the 'borough' area was built-up much before the 18th century.
The old town has a wonderful mix of Main buildings dating from the 16th, 17th, 18th Century. The streets also show this theme in the shop fronts which gives town an oldie world feel. The town has expanded into the countryside around it and there are many Victorian houses built near the town centre.
Julian's Bridge is built of ashlar and squared rubble with some brickwork, carries the road to Bere Regis across the River Stour on eight segmental-pointed arches. Within these arches are seen the chamfered Heathstone voussoirs (a wedge-shaped or tapered stone used to construct an arch) of a narrower bridge in which some arches are semi-circular, others two-centred.
The earlier structure was built in 1636. The outer arches were added in 1844, on both sides of the former bridge, to allow widening of the roadway; at the same time an additional arch was made. Above road level the additions of 1844 carry brick parapet walls with ashlar coping and with corbelled pedestrian refuges. The centre refuge on the southern side has stone cartouches inscribed 1636 and 1844, the earlier date-stone perhaps having been removed from the original bridge and reset.
Damp Proof Course Faults in Wimborne Houses
After the building boom of 1880 in Wimborne many properties were still constructed with different practices and some planning no constraints and were built by Contractors individual tradesman and to different standards.
The problem of rising damp through the floor area should have been entirely removed with introduction of suspended wooden floors which started to be introduced in the late Victorian period.
The difficulty can be that some have been laid on sleeper walls without a DPC. And others the floor joists are built into the wall, either where it’s below DPC or on internal walls where no DPC was ever installed originally. This has caused many common problems to appear from the ground up such as penetrating damp, wet rot, dry rot and an increase need for woodworm treatments.
Wimborne railway info structure was completed in 1847 and ran until 1977 it was linked to the Southampton and Dorchester railway system which later became part of the London and South Western Railway. The railway was able to deal with amount of materials due to its large goods Yard the site is now used by the Towns Market.
