Active Woodworm Treatment
Treating active infestations almost always consists of applying an insecticidal wood preservative. To the surface of the timbers this is usually done by surface spraying. This saturates the timbers with excessive fluid. For deeper burrowing beetles infestations such as Deathwatch beetle by drilling. And then injecting a paste or a concentrate deep into the timber. This penetrates and spreads throughout the inner core of the timber where the wood boring grubs are active. Remember the woodworm grub eats the wood and the woodworm beetle emerges from the wood leaving the tiny holes.
As woodworm specialist any successful woodworm treatment relies on all the timbers in the loft being treated at the same time. So the technician will make access to the roof timbers and ceiling joists. This is done by moving the loft installation and after the treatment putting it back.

Wood Boring Insect
Different types of wood boring beetle prefer varying types of timber. And although there are other wood boring insect the most common are the furniture beetle and Deathwatch beetle. The small common furniture beetle grub lives around the surface of the wood and feeds on softwoods such as pine. The Deathwatch beetle grub is far more damaging due to its deep burrowing nature and can cause serious damage in oak and elm.
The most common wood boring beetle (woodworm) is the common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) which much prefers softwoods. Softwood is wood from gymnosperm trees such as conifers. Softwoods are the source of about 80% of the world’s production of timber.
Deathwatch beetle (Xestobium rufuvillosum) prefers hardwoods. Hardwood is wood from dicot angiosperm trees. The term may also be used for the trees from which the wood is derived; these trees are usually broad leaved such as oak and elm. Hardwood should not be confused with the term heartwood which can be from hardwood or softwood.
How Does Woodworm Enter Your Home?
The Common furniture beetle and Lyctus the explanation is simple. The adult beetle possesses a good pair of wings tucked underneath the wing cases (the elytra) and both species fly readily.
Deathwatch beetle cannot fly and it seems certain that this insect is introduced into a building on the original timbers. Which were from mature oak and chestnut trees already infested with wood rotting fungus and containing Deathwatch beetle.
What is Woodworm?
Woodworm is a generic term which is commonly used in reference to a number of wood boring beetles, the larvae of these insect are able to use damp wood as a food source. These beetles lay their eggs in the crevices of timber, there they wait until they hatch. This results in the larva feeding on the wood by burrowing into the timber which causes tunnels within the wood.
The size of the holes depends on the species the most common wood boring insect found in your home is the common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) which is 1mm – 1.5mm.
The less common Deathwatch beetle (Xestobium rufuvillosum) flight holes are 2mm -3mm.
In the summer months both these beetles can be found in numbers around your windows as they emerge from their pupal chamber. The smaller common furniture beetle can fly but the larger Death watch cannot fly.
There are a number of wood-boring beetles that are easy to misidentify without experienced eyes or sometimes inexperienced surveyors.
The presence of holes in timber does not automatically indicate that an active wood-boring beetle is present. In some cases, the damage, usually minor, can be caused by species such as Bark Borer Beetle (Ernobius Mollis) or Pinhole Borer Beetle, commonly known as Ambrosia Beetle, (families Playpodidae, Scolytidae and Lymexylidae - many species). Usually neither of these beetles will require any form of treatment with the damage noted being historical in nature. The beetles will generally have been eradicated during the preparation of the timber for use, where drying and removal of the bark would take place prior to the timber being used.
In the event of a severe infestation to the timbers from death watch beetle any severely weakened timbers should be replaced or repaired with new treated timbers.
Where Does Woodworm Come From?
Now furniture beetle, Lyctus and deathwatch are found quite commonly outdoors. Deathwatch is much more frequent outside than indoors. Many hardwood trees oak, elm, ash, and especially willow which are dead, perhaps struck by lightning, or with some dead part such as a branch or wound where a branch has broken off, will harbour some Deathwatch. Old pollard willow are perhaps the most fruitful source of these insect and the dead wood in the crown of the tree always seem to support a good colony. Deathwatch is found in such situations where fungal decay is evident.
Furniture beetle is seen to occur where the wood has resisted the onset of fungal attack. Old branch scars on trunks of trees or areas of exposed sapwood are almost always populated by Common furniture beetle.
Lyctus too occurs in the timbers of outdoors. It attacks only the sapwood of certain hardwoods such as oak. Which have been newly felled or up rooted by storm or for some other reason the sap has stopped. Only for a few years does Lyctus occupy such timber, only while the starch content in the sapwood is high. Only perfectly sound timber is attacked. Lyctus is never found in timber attacked by fungus. It is most commonly found in timber yards.
